Tigers celebrate 30 years with Grovy
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Statistically the Secondary Schools Football League’s (SSFL) most illustrious coach, Nigel Grosvenor, will celebrate his 30th year in charge of St Anthony’s College, when many of his top former players reconvene for the Tigers’ Cooler Football Lime—Celebrating 30 years with Grovy, at the school’s ground, in Westmoorings, on Saturday.

Former national Under-17 coach, a teacher and dean at St Anthony’s College as well as technical director of Westside Superstarz, a National Super League team which utilises some of his school’s former talents, Grosvenor, six-time winner of the National InterCol title and three-time Big-Five winner is expected to be honoured by dozens of his former players who will participate in an eight-a-side tournament, beginning at 2 pm.

His first national title winning team in 1997, which included the likes of Soca Warrior Carlos Edwards and Suriname-based forward Sean Cooper will consist of the most senior participants, while a number of players from the latest winning team in 2012 will also attend. The latter team will include Jamali Garcia, Xavier Rajpaul and Keane McIvor.

Two years ago, St Anthony’s won every match in the SSFL and InterCol competitions en route to all available titles, a first for any school. The Tigers did so with the help of players such as goalkeeper Jammal Francois, captain Dwight Ceballo, Moriba Ballah and Raychard Allen, all of whom are expected to play. On paper, a certain team looks favourite to win the eight-a-side competition.

The 2002 team features Williams, Manamar-based Yohance Marshall, former MLS player Julius James, and former national midfielder Kevon Neaves. Between 1997 and 2012, St Anthony’s won the National InterCol title four other times (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2011). A large portion of the players who played in the 2003 title-winning team, also played in the season immediately after when it won the National title for the third consecutive time.

Therefore, a unified team was created between them. The sixth team to participate is a team which consists of some of the best players who never won the National competition, but reached as far as the semifinal stage. They include Westside’s Travis Joseph and former national players who represented T&T in the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Egypt including, Uriah Bentick, Mekeil Williams, Micah Lewis, and Grosvenor’s son Qian Grosvenor.

“They will challenge as the best team, unofficially,” said Grosvenor. “They (the players) are always bragging about who had the best team, so this is their time to show who is boss.”

“However, this is more than football. It will be, for me, nice to see them all together on one field. Whatever era they played in, I look forward to seeing them talking and reuniting after all these years.” Grosvenor said he remains with five official years left of teaching, but thoughts of retiring from football are far from his mind.

“I have no thought of finishing (coaching),” said Grosvenor. “In fact,” he added, “the new format with the SSFL, the introduction of the Premier Division has given me a new challenge. It has revived my appetite. Before, it was getting quite monotonous, but the idea of consistently playing against the best teams in the country is exciting.”

Such reunion activities started at least five years ago, according to Grosvenor. The idea of former players, challenging a current batch of players has expanded significantly within the past couple editions. This Saturday, the annual football reunion event is expected to attract its biggest batch of former players.

He went on to profusely thank Justin Rahael, a former student of St Anthony’s College, who has supported the team via sponsorship from his company Jus Grillin Ltd. The coach has urged all past students and friends of the school to participate. There is no charge to enter. Alcohol will not be sold at the venue but coolers are allowed.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Pres plans schol in Akeem’s name.
By Sascha Wilson (Guardian).

An academic/sports scholarship in the name of former national defender Akeem Adams is being considered as one way of honouring Adams, who died in Hungary on Monday. So said Presentation College Past Pupils Association president Steven Samlalsingh.

The former T&T Under 17 and Under 20 World Cup defender was a student of Presentation College, San Fernando. Adams, who played for the Hungarian top-flight club Ferencvarosi TC, suffered a heart attack in Hungary three months ago. As a consequence, he was given a mechanical heart and his left leg was amputated.

He was expected to undergo a heart transplant in February. In a telephone interview, Samlalsingh said a function to mark the college’s victory in the BGT&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big Five championship was held at the college auditorium on Monday night, but no one was in a celebratory mood.

“Akeem was the captain of the team, the boys (championship team) looked up to him. He suffered for a long time. Three months is a long time without a heart in your body. He will be greatly missed by the team.”

He said Adams laid the groundwork for the college victory at the Big Five—the first time the school had won the championship in 27 years. Since Adams fell ill, Samlalsingh said, the association had been raising money to help him. He said: “We are also looking at setting up a scholarship in his name to honour him for the significant contribution he has made.” Principal Dexter Mitchell also expressed condolences to Adams’s family.

“The college is deedly distressed, because he was one of our own,” he said. At the football function on Monday night, he said, they retired the number three football jersey, which was Adams’s jersey when he played for the school. “We knew that it would have been a difficult recovery, but there was some hope. It was a bit of sadness for all the players,” he said, as well as the teachers. Mitchell has offered the college’s help with  funeral expenses.

Adams’s former principal Errol Jaikaransingh described the 22-year-old footballer as a wonderful young man, always smiling, helpful and polite. “As I told the footballers (the Big Five winners) at the function last night, one must speak well of the dead and we all do, but in truth and in fact one can speak nothing ill of Akeem.

“That young man was sterling, he was a beautiful young man. He played the game as he lived his life, with a gentlemanly passion. You never saw him lose his temper on the field, you never saw him disrespect the officials, you never saw him storm off the field. He was just a gentleman. He played with his heart and it is so ironic that it is his heart that gave out.” Family members are awaiting clearance from Hungary to have his body transported home for his funeral.

Relatives say it could take four or five days for all arrangements to be complete, and for Adams to be brought home. “His mother is waiting on clearance to be able to transport the body and as soon as that happens he will be coming home and we will make the funeral arrangements,” Adams’ cousin Roland Dick told the Guardian. “The doctors are still completing medical reports.”

Dick said he spoke to Adams’ mother yesterday and she said she wanted nothing done until she returned home with her son’s body. “We were having discussions about the venue but when she returns we will let people know what the plans will be,” Dick said.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

SSFL top man joins Virginia Tech.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guadian).

Former St Ann’s Rangers and St Augustine Secondary forward Ricardo John has been snapped up by Virginia Tech men’s football team in the United States for their upcoming season.

John will go to Blacksburg as one of seven players from various backgrounds from four different countries. This balanced recruiting class includes players from the United States, Germany, Liberia and T&T.

“All of these players come from winning cultures and we can’t wait to bring that type of mentality to campus,” team head coach Mike Brizendine said of his seven newcomers.

And about John, he said: “Anytime that you bring in a player who is a Golden Boot winner it creates a high level of expectation. Ricardo has the ability to change games for us. I expect him to be one of the top goal scorers to ever come through the programme.

“As a person, he is everything that I admire in a young man. He is humble and respectful, but aggressive and competitive when it comes to soccer.

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s soccer team is a college soccer programme that competes in NCAA Division 1 and the Coastal Division of Atlantic Coast Conference. Their home games are played at Virginia Tech Lacrosse and Soccer Stadium.

John was named the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) “Player of the Year” for 2013 and was also the school’s topscorer with 21 goals, leading the “Green Machine” to the Coca Cola Intercol title

not if he has a shot at a scholarship. we've arranged for several boys to go to college in the states. got to be the best move, unless they really are exceptional (or not interested in further education)

From what I have seen, he's not ready for Pro. College is his best bet.

Virginia Tech is an excellent school, football aside, I hope he takes real advantage of this opportunity.
