Round of 16Belgium break new ground
FIFA.comTen-man Belgium won their first ever FIFA U-17 World Cup knockout game, defeating Korea Republic 2-0 in a straightforward victory that booked the European side a last-eight date with the victors of Costa Rica and France's clash in Puerto Montt on Thursday.
Birthday boy Jorn Vancamp became the first player to score against the Taeguk Warriors at Chile 2015, before Matthias Verreth's late stunner confirmed the European side's progress. Lee Seungwoo saw his penalty saved by Jens Teunckens after Laurent Lemoine was sent off, and the Koreans could not capitalise on their advantage during the final 20 minutes.
Belgium took the initiative early on. Lee Sangmin surrendered possession in the middle of the Korea Republic midfield, which led to Belgium springing a swift counter attack. Vancamp latched onto Dante Rigo's long ball which the Korean defence failed to cut out and the No19 kept his composure to slot underneath Ahn Joonsoo, the first goal that the Asian side had conceded at Chile 2015.
Just before the interval, Terry Osei-Berkoe switched from the left to Vancamp, who was in good position but missed the ball completely. Verreth follows up with a powerful shot, which went close.
Belgium threatened again in the second half, with Osei-Berkoe unable to finish after Verreth had cut back across the penalty area.
Verreth sealed the victory with a wonderful effort. A long clearance from the Belgian defence was chased down by the long-legged frontman. The PSV Eindhoven forward reached it ahead of the Korea Republic defence, cut inside onto his left foot and hit a thunderous drive past the despairing dive of Ahn Joonsoo, who was left with no chance.
Two substitutes combined for Korea Republic to create an opportunity for the Asian side to pull a goal back. Lee Sangheon slipped in Oh Sehun, who was pulled back by Laurent Lemoine, who saw red for his indiscretion. Seungwoo stuttered in his run up, and Teunckens guessed right, keeping out his spot kick.
The Koreans did not take advantage of their extra man in the closing stages, with Belgium holding firm and Teunckens in particularly inspired form to keep out a Kim Jungmin overhead kick. The historic victory for the Belgians sees them head to Concepcion for their last eight clash, against either Los Ticos or Les Bleuets.
