Former champions Mayaro Spurs have opened up a five-point lead in the Senior Division of the bpTT Mayaro Football League.

Spurs, who are early favourites to claim championship honours this year, occupy the top place in the league standings with 18 points from seven matches.

Spurs suffered their first loss of the season when they were surprisingly beaten in their last match by Grand Lagoon United, 5–3, in the only seventh round fixture played so far. They had beaten Rio Claro United 2–1 and PYM 3–0 in their two previous matches.

Mayguaya United have leapfrogged from seventh to second on the table (on goal difference) with impressive victories in their last three matches.

Mayguaya sit on 13 points, with a match in hand. They edged Guaya United 4–3, with strikes from Kerdell Alfred, Earlon Thomas, Roxel Watson and Sherlon Campbell; beat Grand Lagoon 5–3, with goals from Alfred, Keyion Beckles, Kheelon Ferrier, Kale Casimir and Hakeem Rollingston.

Continuing their winning ways, they then thrashed Rio Claro, with a hat-trick from Beckles. The biggest victory in the league so far was dished out by Mafeking United who mauled bottom-of-the-table Revelation 7–0. The win moved Mafeking to third place in the league, with 13 points from six matches.

Ozone United are also on 13 points but occupy fourth position on goal difference. They played to a goalless draw with Mayaro Boys, then beat PYM 2–1 in their last two matches.

Early joint leader Rio Claro has slipped down the standings to fifth place with 12 points. They lost their last two matches, going down to Spurs and Mayguaya.

Propping up the table are Revelation, All Stars and Terminal Strikers, who have lost all five matches they have played so far. Matches are played daily at the Mayaro Recreation Ground, starting at 4 pm.
