Speyside High School clinched their first BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Tobago Zone title yesterday, as did Chaguanas North Secondary when they ended Carapichaima East Secondary’s winning streak to snatch the Central Zone crown.
Chaguanas North beat Carapichaima 2-1 with goals from Stephan Cruickshank and Dion Ogarro to overtake the Central Zone powerhouses at the top of the standings.
The result was confirmed by SSFL first vice president William Wallace, who said that Chaguanas North would go to the top of the standings based on goal difference.
This after Couva West Secondary pulled out of the competition earlier this season. Wallace said the SSFL still have to make a final determination on Couva West’s withdrawal from the tournament.
However based on precedent, all the games of the team who withdrew would have been eliminated from the competition, meaning that Carapichaima’s 20-0 win over Couva West would not have counted.
In Tobago, Speyside won the crown with two matches to spare without kicking a ball, as their main rivals Mason Hall Secondary lost to Signal Hill Secondary 3-2 in their penultimate match of the league competition.
In the North, East Mucurapo Secondary defeated Fatima College 3-1 at Fatima Ground to ensure the North Zone title would be decided on the final day of the competition, Wednesday.
Mucurapo are now level on 26 points with St Mary’s College with one round of matches to go.
St Mary’s currently lead the standings with a superior goal difference.
Defending champions St Anthony’s also stayed in the hunt with a 6-4 win over QRC in Westmoorings.
St Anthony’s play Mucurapo on Wednesday while St Mary’s face Malick Secondary.
