With the first round now history and the second round one match old, San Juan Secondary and Fatima appear to be the teams to beat in the 2005 British Gas T&T Secondary School’s Football League.

On Saturday, San Juan beat mid-table Hillview College 4-1 to mark a great start to the second half of its league campaign and follow up Wednesday’s emphatic 6-1 victory over defending league champs St Augustine Senior Secondary at their Bourg Malatresse home ground.

Saturday’s win meant that San Juan has maintained its unbeaten start to the season, conceding four and scoring 35 goals in the process for the best goal difference in the country.

Seven points behind the leaders, El Dorado Senior Comprehensive has shown the most promise of challenging for the 2005 title but with eleven points, good enough for third place after seven matches St Augustine’s title defence appears to be in jeopardy.

On their current form the San Juan boys look set to take the league title with the defending champs trailing by 10 points and appearing to be resigned to battling for second.

The only other unbeaten team in the competition is the North Zone’s Fatima College, who themselves have the opportunity to go three points clear today after last Wednesday’s clash with Malick Secondary was postponed in honour of the deceased Rudolph Charles.

Charles, a Malick right back, collapsed ten minutes before half-time during his team’s match against Tranquillity on Friday September 23 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, and died en route o the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, he was 17.

Ahead of today’s matches Fatima sat atop the table on 18 points from six matches with defending league champs Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive, second with 15 points from seven matches.

Fatima’s latest triumph was 10-0 drubbing of Tranquility for a aggregate of 16 goals in their two meetings this season and earlier in the campaign, just like San Juan in the east, beat their zone’s defending champs Mucurapo 2-1.

For its part Mucurapo is holding on for dear lie and is second with only three points behind the leaders who still have a match in hand while Malick, also with a match in hand, is third with 11 points.

The South Zone and Central Zone are both still contests with the top teams in both zones sporting identical win loss draw records.

While Carapichaima and Presentation College have both shown their superiority in racking up four consecutive wins a piece but today is the beginning of round two in Central and a new leader should be recognised.

Presentation hosts Carapichaima while Marabella Junior, the zone’s third placed team is away to Union Claxton Bay.

South is also too close to call as the top two teams, perennial rivals Naparima College and Princes Town Senior Secondary are both on 15 points having won four matches and drawn two while third place Vessigny suffered its loss of the season falling 2-1 to the less fancied Fyzabad Composite.
