Freshman Jevaughn Vance hit the back of the net with 21 seconds left in the second overtime period to give Wayland Baptist a 1-0 win over the University of the Southwest at Hilliard Field on Saturday evening. It was the first home appearance of the season for the Pioneers and their second win.

Vance's shot came at the 119 minute mark of the match. The game-winner came with the Pioneer's down a man after a red card was issued to sophomore Guillermo Villarreal midway through the first OT period.

WBU dominated much of the match, taking 24 shots compared to just six by its opponent. Nine of the Pioneer attempts to score forced saves by the Mustang goalkeeer, while freshman goalie John-Ramses Thomas, making his first start of the season for Wayland, made five saves on the evening.

The victory evened up the Pioneer record at 2-2 on the season. USW falls to 0-3.

Both Wayland teams will return to the field on Monday for afternoon meetings with Northwood University. The women are scheduled to kick off at 1:00 pm with the men following immediately after the conclusion of the opener.
