DEFENDING champions in the Premier Division of the Churches Football League GEMS will come up against Daybreak United in the final on Saturday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar Arima.

Daybreak secured their place in the final after defeating Curepe Amen 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out at Constantine Park in Macoya after both team ended 2-2 on aggregate.

The Morvant based Daybreak needed to beat Curepe Amen by two clear goals after they lost the opening leg 1-0.

However, Daybreak got the much needed opening goal when Jesse Bailey slotted home in the 39th minute.

Coach Gordon Maloney’s decision to introduce his son, David paid dividends as he found the equaliser in the 71st minute.

The game appeared to be heading to a 1-1 draw in favour of Curepe Amen when Garfield Herreira spoiled their party on the stroke of regulation time.

The talented Herreira headed Kareem Hoyte’s cross sweetly to beat the Curepe goalkeeper in the 90th minute and send the game into penalty kicks. And from the spot-kick Daybreak won after Curepe Amen missed their last two kicks.

In the other semi-final, GEMS got the better of St James 3-0. GEMS have already won the League and Big Four titles.
