Striker Sean Jarvis displayed irrepressible goal-scoring form last week, finding the net five times as his team Union United overwhelmed Young Stars 9-0 in the Senior Division of the 2010 bpTT Mayaro Football League.
Occupying a mid-table position in the 14-team competition, Union were ruthless against hapless Young Stars, newcomers to the league. Angus Francis, Kevon Sylvester, Dwayne Trim and Matthew David were the other scorers for Union.
Improving with every game, Union also registered another big victory last week, routing bottom-of-the-table Revelation 5-1. Jarvis scored a brace, while Trim, Brandon Joseph and Joel Jordan were also on the scoresheet.
Young Stars were beaten for the second time in the week, losing out to Mayaro Boys 3-2. Rocklan Jones, Keston Hughes and Kern Joseph scored for Mayaro Boys, while Darren Tang and Michael Robinson got the goals for Young Stars.
Mayguaya United and Mafeking United kept up their challenge for championship honours with resounding victories.
Second-placed Mayguaya routed Revelation 4-0, with goals from Earlon Thomas (2), Keyion Beckles and Andy Campbell.
Mafeking, who occupy third position, slammed Terminal Strikers 7-1, with a beaver-trick from star striker Leroy Jones. He was ably supported by K. Francois, who hit a hat-trick.
Ozone FC, who are enjoying a good run in this year's competition, beat All Stars 3-1, with goals from Dixon Blackman (2) and Marvin La Foucade. Ryan Omarlo scored the lone item for All Stars.
Also last week, Guaya United and PYM Madrid played to a 1-1 draw, with Kumi Francois scoring for Guaya, while Jaron Nurse replied for PYM.
Razack Jan, livewire of the Mayaro Football League, said he was extremely pleased with the standard of play at the half-way stage of the league competition.
"We still have a long way to go in the season, but already we are seeing a good brand of football. The competition will go down to the wire because any of four or five teams can take the title," he said.
Jan said he was happy with the number of teams in the Senior Division (14), with five newcomers in Terminal Strikers, Young Stars, Revelation, Guaya United and All Stars.
"We have had an influx of new teams this year which means that more youths are playing the sport in the wider Mayaro region.
This development augurs well for the revival of our football. We intend to pave the way for the footballing talent in Mayayo to realise its full potential and for the players to go on to become professionals and play at the highest level," he added.
Youth development is also a major driving force for the Mayaro League, with eight teams competing in the Under-18 Division and five in the Under-15 Division.
