Reggaefan you have to understand that TnT is unique in that it is the only Carribbean island (that I know of) that does NOT depend on nor desire a tourist industry.

As you've gathered from snippets in this discussion Dr. Eric Williams purposely did not try to develop tourism here since, in his view, tourism was a form of economic colonialism.  For the most part he was right.

As proud and independent as Jamaica is, tourism has you by the neck and don't know it.  If the US wanted to pressure you all they would need to do is threaten to issue a travel advisory and what could you do?  Stand your ground and watch your economy collapse?

I think not.

As the the law that many here are referring to:  Basically the area between the low tide and high tide marks belong to the public and access cannot be denied to the said area.

PantherX....you are fortunate to have petroleum products as a foundation for your economy. If yo were to have depended on tourism, I suspect that things would be a little rough for T&T, mainly because of geographical location. How many white sand beaches do you have in T&T? From the little I see while visiting there some 8 years ago, not many. Tourism has made the Bahamas one of the richest Caribbean nations. The power of the toursim dollar is powerful! Barbados too has gained significant wealth from tourism.

Yes, but let another crisis like 9-11 happen...wha would happen to allyuh tourism...leh ah hurricance come n lick up Jamaica...wha would happen to allyuh tourism? That's a very fickle sector and it isn't recommended that ah country solely depends upon it. Trinidad could have devloped a tourism sector if the Gov't so chose for instance eco-tourism. We have the most amount of flora and fauna per/capita. All those nature freaks would go crazy. Then we have the Devil's Wood Yard, the Ptch Lake, etc. N doh talk bout fuh Tobago and Little Tobago.

The issue here is that Trinis have a MAJOR problem with the idea of private beaches, for us the beaches belong to everyone, but then again we don't

So let me get this straight. If I own a home in Trinidad, and that home happens to have a nice white sand beach as part of my back yard, should I expect that people from all over Trinidad will feel they have a "Right" to the beach, and hence, a right to my private property?

Yes, the beach was dey before you buy the house. Wha de arse, how yuh could own ah beach? Yuh HOUSE is yuh private property. A family had tried to Privatise the best beach in Tobago n make people pay for access, n the people made an out-cry, n de Gov't say "None ah dat" and the beach is now Public once again.

I am not sure but do they play the National anthems before every match. Then our should be done but Steel Pan. Red black and white should be the colors for fa\ns alike while here in Germany. Soca DJ's should come with their music arrangements can be made for places for them to play. I know a great deal of places.

Yo, so why allyuh Trinis must turn everyting into ah fete? Jah boy.

Yes...but why privatise it to cater to foreigners and your native people have to pay to get on? That doesn't make any sense at all.

Yuh dont make much sense there fellah. As far as i know, theonly private beaches in Jamaica are the ones that exist in a man's back yard. The sandals beaches are not private....they are open to the public WHO ARE WILLING TO PAY TO STAY AT SANDALS, you may have to pay a fee to sleep, eat and stay at the hotel..in which case, youalso have access tothe hotel. Does the T&T government give free petroleum products to the native people of T&T or do they have to pay for it?

again, beachjes not in short supply in Jamaica or anywhere in the Caribbean for that matter. I beleive there are 365 of them in tiny antigua alone.

The issue here is that Trinis have a MAJOR problem with the idea of private beaches, for us the beaches belong to everyone, but then again we don't have a tourist besed economy. It is therefore understandable why countries that are primarily tourist based have private beaches. Different cultural perspective.

BTW the T&T govt doesn't give away free petrol to native Trinis but they do subsidize the hell out of it for local consumption. We pay much less for gas et al than the rest of the Caribbean. check the figures. :chilling:

Yuh veryright about the oil subsidies ting. Dise why Ja wanted tuh play wrong and strong n say we must sell dem oil at our national prices or else dey'll go somewhere else. steupsssss!  :D

actually canada has better medical care

do you know what they do to you if you get aids in cuba???

what america has to do with anything???

who the hell ranks this shit anyway??

is it a man who gets shot and goes to every hospital in the world to see how he gets treated???

or is it some asshole with no proper wock to go to and decide to rank the best beaches in the world and shyt like that

stupessssssssssssssssssssssss

More like the World Health Organisation.

Also, the US has a lot to do with it because they are largely responsible for the propoganda about Cuba, whereas Europe and other countries, the Caribbean included acknowledge Cuba's excellence in the field of medicine. I know that Cuba isolated the HIV positive patients to prevent the spread of the disease, but what about the US injecting a group of A.A's with syphillis some good years ago to study the effects the disease had on the body and then refuse them treatment? Which one is worse? Buh wha'ever...

Sounds like that to me too.  :D

No preparation required We will either get plenty licks or real licks

Jamaica was able to loose 1-0 to brazil

But now with Ronaldo Adriano Rondhino and Kaka Robinho waiting in the wings I seeing real licks comming from Brazil.

Best bet if for them to come with a local brazil squad.

Yeah Eric Williams deliberately did not develop our tourism sector. He said after Independence "Massa day Done", buh like Jamaicans like tuh lick bottom dise why nearly all de beaches privatised.

Where you get it from that all Jakan beaches privatised? Hotels have right to restrict access to their beaches o the people who pay to use it.....but I know at least 8 public beaches with golden sand in the Parish of St.Thomas alone.
Quote

No...all allyuh beaches ain privatised...just de BEST ones. N since when resorts have a right to restrict access to the beaches from the Native people? Why should they only cater to the rich and to the foreigners? Gwey!

Have you ever even been to Jamaica? take a drive along the north coast parish of Portland and you'll see the most beautiful white sand beaches your eyes ever behold, most of them are public beaches. So wait, you are saying to me that if you purchase prime real estate land with a beac that you intend to use for your private recreation, you woulkdnt have a problem with people from all over the world showing up on your property without an invitation? Beaches are not in short supply in Jamaica, so its not a big deal if a man want to privatise his, as long as its on his property.

Yes...but why privatise it to cater to foreigners and your native people have to pay to get on? That doesn't make any sense at all. Ah thought Jamaicans "Naaaah bow!"?

The simple fact is that because of our mineral wealth we have never promoted ourselves for tourism as has been done in Jamaica and Barbados.  Eric Williams never did want the white tourists contaminating his country (I mean............Barbados culture is an oxymoron and it's only through reggae/dancehall and its larger size that Jamaica has managed to hold on to its identity in the face of the white tide).

Is it any wonder that they are the islands most recognized in the Caribbean???

Also be fair who ever came up the with the name Jamaica is a marketing genius after all It does roll off the tougue more easily the Trinidad and Tobago  ;D!

BTW before people start bawling racism I'm a white Trini.........OK more like off-white.

General Discussion / Re: How to pronounce "Steups" ?
« on: November 22, 2005, 02:19:45 PM »
i know, what it means, but it is more like soaking or blowing and where does the tongue lie ?

Umm....well as someone so wisely said before it depends on if you're "right-steupsted or left steupsted" :D But when I steups my tongue is slightly between my teeth and it's to the left side (so I'm left steupsted) and you have to make a sucking motion and the sound that comes out is a "steups". It's mostly used to convey annoyance, disgust, anger, etc and if done by a child to an adult it's a sing of gross disrespect.
