Women Warriors, coach receive their $$.
T&T Express Reports.

The Trinidad and Tobago women’s senior football team, including the technical staff, were handed cheques to the value of $1.5 million yesterday at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s, a promised one-off incentive payment for their performance at the CONCACAF World Women’s Championship (World Cup qualifying) tournament in the USA last month.

As she did with the male Soca Warriors last week, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar once again presided over the distribution of cheques to the players and staff that included T&T captain Maylee Attin-Johnson and head coach, US native Randy Waldrum, who initially drummed up financial support when the TTFA’s mis-communication and administrative bungling saw part of the female team travel to the Texas with only US$500.

The cheque hand-over was the delivery of a promise the Government made prior to their third-place play-off match in the CONCACAF tournament earlier this month. The Women Soca Warriors lost that match but earned a play-off spot in a two-leg tie with Ecuador.

The Waldrum-coached squad drew the first leg 0-0 in Quito on November 8 and need a win in the decisive second leg playoff next Tuesday in Port of Spain to qualify for the Canada 2015 Women’s World Cup. Another goalless draw would mean extra time and possible penalties while Ecuador would advance on a draw with goals.

Persad-Bissessar reminded the girls of the emotion and unity of the Strike Squad 25 years prior and urged them to zero in on the task. “You are one step away from creating history. You can become the first women’s team from T&T and in fact the Caribbean to qualify for the Women’s World Cup final.

‘’That is tremendous pressure knowing that you are not only fulfilling your own hopes and dreams but the hopes and dreams of a country and an entire region resting on your shoulders. Let not that pressure weigh you down, let that pressure lift you up so that you can go there and do your very best on Tuesday,” the PM said.

She continued: “You will be on show to the world in the Hasely Crawford Stadium. You are on the verge of making it. the country will be behind you as you seek to create history....I say to you, you must remain focused, just try to stay focused and do you best.”

Minister of Sport Dr Rupert Griffith said the girls had shown total sacrifice to reach this stage through “blood sweat and tears”.

“You have done us proud as a nation and we are looking forward with great anticipation when we win and we take our next step in our World Cup journey,” Griffith said. Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillips said the Government’s investment had paid off and looked forward to continued partnership with the Government after thanking the administration for their generosity.

Skipper Attin-Johnson expressed gratitude to the Government for their contribution and support. “Speaking for us, the team, we want to be appreciated and love and most importantly respected. We know we have inspired a lot of people and made a huge impact in the lives of people around the world....we know that the job is not finished. We haven’t accomplished our mission as yet....we will remain focussed.

‘’We will remain grounded in this game but I urge the people of T&T to come out and be the instrument in our orchestra. Come out and be the 12th warrior and be part of something magical, historical and epic. We will win come December 2,” she said.

T&T Guardian Reports.

Don’t let pressure get to you, says Kamla.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday urged the T&T Football Association (TTFA) to seek alternate revenue streams for the comfort of its player and for the development of football in this country.

Persad-Bissessar gave the feature address at a ceremony hosted at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, where her Government handed over $1.5 million in $50,000 cheques to individual members of the T&T’s “Women Soca Warriors” and their supporting management and coaching staff.

The ceremony was attended by high ranking officials from the Ministry of Sport, the Sport Company, and the TTFA, in similar style to a function held at the Office of the Prime Minister, where the TTFA, along with national senior men’s footballers and staff received cheques totalling $9.964 million to clear a backlog of match fees, bonuses and salaries.

However, yesterday’s function was held to recognise and reward the Women Warriors’ outstanding performance at the Concacaf Women’s Championship, held in the USA, last month, where they placed fourth to earn an intercontinental Fifa Women’s World Cup playoff spot against Ecuador.

The team already played the first leg in Quito, Ecuador, earlier this month and earned a hard-fought goalless draw and are now preparing for the second leg, which will be hosted at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, on Tuesday.

In her address, Persad-Bissessar said she hoped “the TTFA can improve in its efforts to fund football,” before offering sentiments of encouragement to the footballers who are now five days away from the biggest match of their lives. “Don’t let the pressure get to you; Let it motivate you,” said Persad-Bissessar, who drew reference to the 1989 Strike Squad team, which narrowly lost out on qualification for the 1990 Fifa World Cup.

“Unlike them (Strike Squad), we need to win,” she said, reminding the team that a penalty shoot-out could go either way and that a draw would not suffice.

In response, captain of the team Maylee Attin Johnson thanked the Government for its acknowledgement of the team’s efforts, but added that “riches are not what matters. We do this for the love of the game,” Attin Johnson said.

“We know we have inspired and brought joy (to the nation), but the job is not done. (Regardless) we will be motivated… We will win come December 2!”

The players who were present were Attin Johnson, Tenisha Palmer, Ayanna Russell, Arin King, Khadisha Debesette, Lauryn Hutchinson, Patrice Superville, Khadidra Debesette, Mariah Shade, Dernelle Mascall, Tasha St Louis, Ahkeela Mollon and Kennya Cordner. The coaching and management staff members present were Vernetta Flanders, Michael Taylor, Lincoln Phillips, Peter Rampersad, Margaret Ottley and head coach Randy Waldrum.

Some US college-based players will be unable to receive their incentives because of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules. An Sports Company of T&T (SporTT) official indicated that the special-interest company is seeking ways for players to benefit from the incentives through legal means.

Yesterday tickets for the match continued to be sold at a furious pace, with several outlets having to call for more, while the exclusive 12th man T-shirt, printed in support of the team, and available at The Fan Club outlets in Movietowne, Trincity Mall, and Gulf City Mall, also met with great support.

Women Warriors coach Randy Waldrum collects his cheque from Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar at yesterday’s distribution ceremony at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s. Team captain Maylee Attin Johnson, is next to the coach.

Last Warrior arrives for WCup decider.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Starting goalkeeper Kimika Forbes was expected to arrive in Trinidad last night to complete the 22-player training squad currently preparing for Tuesday’s second leg World Cup qualifying fixture versus Ecuador.

Forbes follows her sister Karyn Forbes, along with Rhea Belgrave and Brianna Ryce, who arrived from the USA on Wednesday evening. They were permitted to train with the team given the Thanksgiving holiday.

The players are camping at Hyatt Regency, Wrightson Road, and are training at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The training squad largely represents the team which traveled to Ecuador earlier this month for the goalless first-leg, but also includes a couple of virtually unknown names in the likes of sisters Nia and Amira Walcott, who are uncapped for the senior team.

In 2010, they were both invited to train with the national U-17 women’s team, before T&T hosted the Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup, but failed to make the final squad. Back-up shot stopper, Tenisha Palmer, who was excluded from the squad for the first leg against Ecuador, was also left out of the training squad as she recovers from an injury.

She was replaced by Saundra Baron.

The training team comprises, Baron, Ryce, Belgrave, the Forbes (Kimika and Karyn), the Walcotts (Nia and Amera), Maylee Attin Johnson, Ayanna Russell, Patrice Superville, Ahkeela Mollon, Mariah Shade, Janine Francois, Arin King, Khadisha Debesette, Khadidra Debesette, Tasha St Louis, Anique Walker, Dernelle Mascall, Jasmine Sampson and Lauryn Hutchinson.

Meanwhile, Ecuador will touch down in Trinidad on Saturday, three days before the match.

The “Tricolor” will camp at the Courtyard at Marriott, Invader’s Bay, which is directly opposite the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the venue of Tuesday’s match.

For Ecuador to beat T&T to qualification for Canada, the South American nation will require a direct win, or any draw other than a nil-nil result, which will force extra-time and potentially penalties.

Ecuador’s head coach Vanessa Aráuz said, in the Ecuadorian press, her team will need to “build a fast game with an attacking mind set”, as opposed to playing for “luck that is accompanied with a draw.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Waldrum to name 20-player squad today

The 22-member women’s senior national team currently in training for the second intercontinental Fifa Women’s World Cup qualification playoff home leg fixture will be trimmed to 20 players today. The final squad to face Ecuador on Tuesday will then be made public either tonight or tomorrow morning. Head coach Randy Waldrum confirmed this yesterday. The players were given a day off yesterday, ahead of today’s “shut down” when players will not be permitted visitors or allowed out of camp. The last player to touch down was starting goalkeeper Kimika Forbes, who arrived in T&T from the US on Thursday night. Her sister, Karyn, as well as Rhea Belgrave and Brianna Ryce all arrived a night before from the respective US colleges.

They are on a Thanksgiving break and will likely return to school on Wednesday. First team regular, Liana Hinds was unfortunately unable to make the trip because of final exams at the University of Connecticut, while back-up goalkeeper Tenisha Palmer is recovering with a leg injury. A few players have made their way in the squad, most notably in the form of uncapped midfield pair, sisters Nia and Amira Walcott, who were also welcomed to train with the national Under-17 team four years ago, but failed to make the final team for the Fifa Women’s Under- 17 World Cup, hosted here that year. Responding to queries on their inclusion, Waldrum suggested that they were invited following advice of his support staff. “As coach, I’ll always be looking at talent that can help our national teams,” he said, adding, “I have a great network of coaches around the world and in the USA as do our other staff coaches.” “It’s through recommendations, video, etcetera, that we find these players. That’s how these players came to be invited into camp,” Waldrum explained.

The players currently training at the Hasely Crawford Stadium are Baron, Ryce, Belgrave, the Forbes sisters (Kimika and Karyn), the Walcott sisters (Nia and Amira), Kennya Cordner, Maylee Attin Johnson, Ayanna Russell, Patrice Superville, Ahkeela Mollon, Mariah Shade, Janine Francois, Arin King, Khadisha Debesette, Khadidra Debesette, Tasha St Louis, Anique Walker, Dernelle Mascall, Jasmine Sampson and Lauryn Hutchinson. Meanwhile, on the opposite end, the Ecuador team is expected to arrive at Piarco International Airport today at approximately 4.30 pm. The South Americans will then make their way down to the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Invaders Bay, where they will camp for the duration of their stay. They will train at field outside of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, tomorrow, from 10 am, and again on Monday from 6 pm.

Members of the T&T Women Warriors, from left Janine Francois, Patrice Russell and Arin King pose with one of the official Tshirts which are being sold in support of the team for Tuesday’s World Cup decider against Ecuador. The girls paid a courtesy call to The Fan Club in Movietowne yesterday where they endorsed the shirts. The Fan Club’ s three branches at Movietowne, Trincity and Gulf City are the official stores for the shirts.

Waldrum: Ecuador under less pressure.
Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Ecuador may have somewhat of an advantage playing away from home on Tuesday, when the South American nation battles host T&T in the decider for Concacaf/Comnebol’s final representative at the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Randy Waldrum, head coach of T&T’s senior women’s team, said “They, just like us, will believe they have everything to play for and will fancy their chances.” These words echoed sentiments of his opposite number, Vanessa Arauz, who was less than impressed with Ecuador’s first leg goalless draw at home earlier this month.

Arauz, in a recent report in the Ecuadorian press, said her team was nervous and may have been overawed by the fan support in Quito but promised a much improved showing when Ecuador play away from home. “I think, being the first time we're in a playoff and playing in a stadium (which was) pretty full, (I) felt that the players went pretty nervous,” Arauz said. “Our goal was to go out with a score of 2-0 and give 100 percent. Corrections will be made. We went out with every expectation of winning. (It) was never our intention to settle for a negative result. In Port-of-Spain, (we will) give one hundred percent to bring the classification.”

In a recent interview, however, Arauz suggested that her team may adopt a conservative strategy on Tuesday as “going on the attack from the first minute,” may not be the ideal strategy. “We have to be very smart to not give away the spaces in our court. They are very fast and we can not let them play with freedom,” said Arauz.

Arauz, along with her technical staff and players, arrived at the Piarco International Airport, yesterday afternoon, and then made their way down to their camp at Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Invaders Bay, which is directly opposite to the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the venue for Tuesday’s match.

The team travelled with 22 players, but will cut the squad down to 20 players for the match.

The T&T team, meanwhile, trained at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, yesterday and will return today. Ahead of Tuesday, the most highly anticipated day in the history of women’s football locally, Waldrum said he has to prepare his team for a very testing encounter. “I think we’ve got to prepare ourselves for a very strong challenge from them on Tuesday,” Waldrum said. “They are maybe, under much less pressure being away from home and they will try to spoil our party.”

T&T will need to avoid conceding a goal. As the first leg ended goalless, Ecuador will qualify for the World Cup with any draw other than a goal-less result. If full time and extra time ends goalless, the match will be decided on a penalty shoot-out. An outright win by any score-line will see T&T advance. Waldrum was expected to name the final 20-player squad last night.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Lmfao.  Well I watched the players board their team bus this morning at about 10:45 am. They were all dressed like they were ready to practise. However I did not see which way the bus went. I walked back over to Hasley however they must've went to the double secret training location. They know the Soca Warriors are spying on them so they headed to the hills.  ;D

Not hearing anything about a pre-game tailgate party.  :bs: :cursing:

Ecuador women on pioneer mission.
By Garth Wattley (Express).

Vanessa Arauz is a petite 25-year old, who could easily be one of the 11 players who will be taking the field against Maylee Attin-Johnson and the Trinidad and Tobago women’s football team in tomorrow’s second leg World Cup qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

She is instead however, the counterpart of T&T coach Randy Waldrum.

Arauz, formerly in charge of Ecuador’s female Under-17 team, is the first woman to coach Ecuador’s senior national side. She is a pioneer already. But having only taken charge of the side in April, she and her charges will be aiming to make more history for their country with victory tomorrow.

A win or a 1-1 draw or higher would take the Ecuadorians to their first-ever Women’s World Cup; a feat their men have achieved three times.

The possibilities for the women’s game in her country does not escape the coach.

“It’s really important for the development of soccer because if we win the game, the children who want to play really have an excuse, because if one (Ecuador) team qualifies, I think if I prepare correct, I can one day go to a national team to represent,” she said, her halting English conveying the message in the lobby of the Marriott Courtyard hotel.

She adds for emphasis, “I think (it will) change a lot of views of people to say okay, the women can play soccer, it’s not only for boys.”

The Ecuador women are not accustomed playing in front of packed stadiums, but the significance of what this two-leg playoff against their Caribbean opponents can mean, has fired up public interest.

“In this year, it was the first time to have 20,000 people to watch the game Trinidad/Ecuador,” she says of the first leg 0-0 draw. “It is the first time in history. It was really a surprise for us.”

However, there is now heightened media interest back home and Arauz and her team left South America with many public offerings of support.

“It’s really important for all the team to know that we have that support,” the coach stresses.

Arauz’s players felt that added pressure in Quito. But in Port of Spain, she feels her side will be able to play more freely, despite the high stakes.

“I think for us it’s better because in Ecuador, the people say you have to win, you have to win. Here, the team is more relaxed...I don’t know if in Trinidad people go to the stadium and see the women’s team but I think it’s more pressure (for T&T).

The match will be between two teams of different styles. Waldrum’s is the stronger, more physical side, with potency added by “two players who are really quick,” according top coach Arauz. She was referring to Ahkeela Mollon and Kennya “Ya Ya” Cordner.

“We play with more creativity and short passes; that is I think the difference.”

The Ecuadoreans trained at the “very hot” Larry Gomes stadium yesterday morning. But despite coming from the their much cooler base in Quito, Arauz says, “the team feels happy and we will do good in the match.”

And despite all that she and her opposite number Waldrum may do by way of tactics on the bench, Ecuador’s coach feels her squad, the core of which have been in the setup since 2000, will succeed because of their desire.

“We fight a lot of time to reach this moment,” she says.

“They have to put their heart on the field and fight to the final and do everything.”

Final preparations
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior women’s football team head-coach Randy Waldrum is spending the time approaching tomorrow’s critical World Cup inter-continential playoff against Ecuador by making plans to take T&T to its first-ever qualification for a Women’s World Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago face the South Americans at 6 p.m. at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, following a 0-0 draw in Quito on November 7. The aggregate winner over two legs will earn the final spot in the 24-team 2015 Women’s World Cup to be played in Canada.

“From a coaches’ perspective, the staff will have a few details to finalise, such as what the starting eleven is going to be,” Waldrum said. “We’re not going to change a lot between today and Tuesday before the game,” Waldrum said. “We have to keep them tapered down a bit so that we can be fresh for Tuesday.

“Waldrum has already dropped his training sessions to one per day leading up to the big match and also gave the team last Friday off to be with family. He felt it important to keep them in the right frame of mind.

Speaking to the Trinidad Express after Saturday’s night training, Waldrum said: “We gave them yesterday off just to handle tickets and family. I don’t want it to be a burden. It can be a burden playing at home, and I don’t want that to be,” the experienced American coach said.

“We gave them yesterday off, said take care of your tickets, your family, get everything done. So, these next couple of days we can really focus on the game.”

Waldrum said that apart from football, a great part of preparing for the second leg was overcoming team fatigue. He brought in conditioning specialist Gregory Seales, who worked with American John De Witt to improve players conditioning for seven days after the return from Ecuador.

“We been going since CONCACAF. We didn’t have any breaks. We had Dallas (camp) before CONCACAF (Women’s Championships) and after that we had to go right to Mexico to prepare, then to Ecuador to prepare.”

Following the condition phase, Waldrum returned to the training field and believes the T&T women have done what was required to prepare for the game.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

A time to be positive

A time to be positive
By Fazeer Mohammed (T&T Express)

This is it, ladies.

After two near-misses, there’s no second, third or fourth chance after tomorrow evening’s showdown with Ecuador. It’s goalless from the first leg in Quito three weeks ago, so there’s everything to play for, not just for Trinidad and Tobago, but also for the Ecuadorians.

Make no mistake. The South Americans are here believing that this will also be their moment of glory, their chance to ruin the anticipated home celebrations and make it to next year’s Women’s World Cup finals in Canada as first-time participants, much in the same way that the hosts are seeking to become the first nation from the English-speaking Caribbean to reach the pinnacle of the female game.

Whether or not there is a full house at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, there will be nerves in the home camp. But it’s up to Maylee Attin-Johnson and her team to use that anxiety positively by staying focussed from first minute to last, whatever the situation. Momentary relaxation after taking the lead against Mexico in the third-place playoff of the CONCACAF tournament last month in the United States proved costly.

Even now, with a place in the finals so close, so many of us are still slow to buy into the significance of the occasion, dismissing it as “only” women’s football. We are bandwagonnists by nature though, so expect a bit of fervour, a bit of passion from people who hardly knew anything about the trials and tribulations of the team in getting to this stage where they are in with a better-than-even chance of filling the 24th and final spot for the finals.

Coach Randy Waldrum has acknowledged that playing at home will be tricky. A home crowd in excess of 15,000 will be unprecedented in women’s football in this country. Will the national players feel the sudden weight of expectation from countrymen and women who previously didn’t seem to even know that they existed? Will the roar and groans of thousands of voices be a boost or a burden?

Obviously a lot will depend on how the game unfolds. A win for either side clinches qualification, full stop, but a scoring draw (1-1, 2-2, etc) will earn the Ecuadorians a ticket to Canada by virtue of the scoreless stalemate in the first leg. So will they go for the early strike, knowing that it will put pressure on the hosts to score at least twice, or keep Trinidad and Tobago goalless and frustrated deep into the game while looking for the late item that will clinch the tie?

As we saw in the first game where they came on as second half substitutes seeking to take advantage of a tiring T&T team in the draining and disorienting altitude of the Ecuadorean capital, the nippy striking pair of Monica Quinteros and Elizabeth Caicedo are likely to pose the greatest threat to a defence that has been heavily reliant on the excellent Kimika Forbes in goal throughout this qualifying campaign.

There is talent and experience up front for the home side as well in the personalities of Kennya Cordner and Ahkeela Mollon, so an intriguing duel is in the offing. At the end of the day though, the team that prevails will more than likely be the one that is driven by the greatest desire from within.

In that sense, Trinidad and Tobago may appear to have overcome more hurdles (including being left stranded briefly in Dallas ahead of the CONCACAF tournament) in reaching this far. But the Ecuadoreans have also shown character on the pitch, rallying from a 1-2 halftime deficit to defeat Argentina 3-2 in the critical third-place playoff of South American qualifying to get to this decisive two-match duel with the red, white and black.

I suppose for us ordinary citizens who will never be called upon to deliver for an expectant nation, it is difficult to understand how anyone can stay calm and focussed ahead of such a big occasion. So maybe perspective is important at a time like this.

In a tearful tribute to his fallen teammate Phillip Hughes, Australian Test cricket captain Michael Clarke recalled on Friday how the ever-positive left-handed batsman would often say to his teammates: “Where else would you rather be boys, than playing cricket for your country?”

That’s a much better way to approach the challenge instead of being bogged down by supposed pressure and freezing up with anxiety and tension. It’s a privilege, it’s an honour to wear the national colours...and to be on the doorstep of history to boot.

So, where else would you rather be girls, than playing football for your country and taking us to the World Cup finals?

Let’s all go for goal
By Keith Subero (T&T Express)

Regrettably, the historic significance of tomorrow’s women’s football match between Trinidad and Tobago and Ecuador may slip by many Trinbagonians unnoticed.

A young shop attendant admitted unashamedly to me last week that she was not aware there was a FIFA women’s World Cup, “because of my studies at UWI”.

Neither was she aware that our Soca Princesses are scheduled to play their final game right here at the Hasely Crawford Stadium for a place in the World Cup finals in Canada.

“That match is of historic importance to T&T; it’s part of the journey of November 1989,” a member of The Strike Squad of 1989 told me last week.

“It is one of those moments in time. It is not just 11 girls playing a game, but as the scoreboard says, ‘T&T’ … no, all 1.3 million of us in … ‘T&T versus Ecuador’. Moments in this game will stay with everyone of us in the years to come.”

I was touched by his summation because, like him, I recognise that success tomorrow could be that hoped-for bright spot which could change the current mood of this young nation.

As we spoke my head went to another place. I was recalling the words of the great CLR James: “There is no nation, unless the citizens feel the need for self-defence.”

And that is what is required of every citizen tomorrow: first, positive expressions of our national character, then all forms of collective action demonstrating that we are all bound together in support of our Soca Princesses.

In other words, a transformation of our differences into an emotional, national hand-holding experience that says, “We are all Trinbagonians in defence of our nation”.

We all need that bright spot right now. This fractured society is in urgent need of any experience that will help us remember, acknowledge and celebrate those positives in our national character.

Let’s admit it. Recent events across the national landscape have been bleak, unpleasant, and often ugly. In brief, falling oil prices, in spite of the Finance Minister’s assurances, could mean government projects, now under construction, may have no future, and worse, those falling prices could mean reductions in social welfare expenditure; Petrotrin and T&TEC, because of mismanagement, now stand near bankruptcy; Manzanilla is a disaster area; brutal murders in Brasso Seco and Tobago; the Prime Minister’s indifference to Dr Wayne Kublalsingh’s hunger strike; questions surrounding the Curepe interchange – all these form part of a perception of government corruption, incompetence, gimmickry, and arrogance.

Among the population, such events have created pockets of cynicism, feelings of powerlessness, suspicion, distrust, and alienation which seem to be taking us down a sad path towards an anomic state.

So what the Soca Princesses need tomorrow is the whole of Trinidad and Tobago sending them positive vibes throughout the day. They do not need mere spectators in the stadium – but supporters to transform its atmosphere, backing them throughout the full 90 minutes, or as the promotion says, supporters who re-create themselves into the 12th Soca Princess on Team T&T.

My Strike Squad friend said: “Many do not realise that in 1989 the crowd was not alive, or with us. Under pressure, there was an eerie silence, no vocal support. In boxing, a boxer, under pressure, gets inspiration from the persons in his corner, and that’s what the girls need tomorrow – T&T’s full support, throughout the match.”

The moment demands the supportive intensity we demonstrated in the past. We were behind our Olympic, and then world-record breaking track team in the 1960s; we gave national support to Hasely Crawford in 1976; we were behind our netball girls in 1979, urging them on to become joint world champions; we continue to salute Brian Lara for his many cricketing achievements; and we still talk about our male football team’s experiences in Bahrain and Germany in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The Strike Squad member said: “In Latin America, supporters give a distinctive hum throughout the match. Playing in Mexico, the T&T team felt challenged, at every moment, by a stadium of 100,000 Mexican supporters. That’s the support our girls need.”

CLR, I am sure, would have said that, just like cricket, our Soca Princesses’ football match tomorrow may go beyond the boundary…throughout T&T.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
